Moving Your Store from OpenCart to Seo-Gen CMS

An online store on OpenCart usually launches quickly and cheaply, and a few years later the owner notices that a large share of the budget goes into keeping the engine alive. OpenCart migration to Seo-Gen CMS takes hosting, updates and backups off the owner, while the catalog, design, product URLs and earned search rankings stay in place.

Why are stores leaving OpenCart?

The Seo-Gen team moves stores from OpenCart and builds based on it, such as ocStore, by hand, because there is no automatic import from this platform. We create products and categories, carry over images, texts and meta tags, recreate the design 1:1 and set up redirects from every old URL.

OpenCart is an open-source engine that gave many online stores a fast and affordable start. Studios build both turnkey OpenCart stores and packaged builds with a ready set of extensions and a theme. The difficulties come later, when the store grows and every new task runs into extensions, hosting and a developer's free time.

Owners usually leave for similar reasons: money and time keep going into supporting the engine. Below are the main ones, and if you are looking for an OpenCart alternative and thinking about a move from OpenCart, they are easy to compare with your current costs.

Extensions, upgrades and custom work

An OpenCart store is assembled from the core, a theme and extensions, and the extensions are written by different developers for specific engine versions. While the store is small, this setup is cheap and lets you add a needed feature quickly without in-house development.

As the catalog grows, extensions multiply and start depending on each other, so an edit in one place can break a neighboring extension or the theme. That leads to the two cost items owners mention most often: engine version upgrades and small jobs billed by the hour.

Engine version upgrades

When you upgrade, some extensions stop working and the old theme needs manual edits. On the OpenCart forum, moving between major versions, for example from ocStore 2.3 to 3.0, is described as moving data into a clean installation and testing every extension.

Because of this, many stores stay on an old engine version for years, since every upgrade turns into a separate project with its own budget. In Seo-Gen CMS system updates are part of the subscription at no extra charge, and the agency fixes anything broken by an update free of charge on every plan.

Development billed by the hour

Any task beyond the engine's standard features turns into a job for a developer: a new filter, a block on the home page, an edit to the product page template or a conflict between two extensions. Even a small edit waits for a free developer and is billed by the hour, so the store gradually comes to depend on one person.

In Seo-Gen CMS custom work requested by the client is also paid separately, at UAH 600 per hour and under an agreed estimate. The difference is that system updates, fixes of the agency's own errors and breakages after updates need no separate order, because that work is already part of the subscription.

Hosting, security and speed

OpenCart is installed on the owner's own hosting, so the server, PHP and database versions, the SSL certificate and backups also remain the owner's concern. If the store gets hacked or the server cannot handle a rush of shoppers, the owner and their developer have to deal with the consequences themselves.

The speed of such a store depends on the hosting, the theme and the number of extensions, and each extension adds its own scripts and database queries. Seo-Gen CMS builds pages on the server side, prepares 12 sizes of every image for different screens and issues the HTTPS certificate for the domain on its own.

What do we transfer manually when moving from OpenCart?

The Seo-Gen team moves an OpenCart store by hand: specialists create every category and product page, upload images to the media library and build pages from blocks. This approach takes more time, but at every step you can see what has reached the new website and what is still missing.

Data in OpenCartHow it looks in Seo-Gen CMS
Categories and subcategoriesThe same catalog structure, URLs according to the redirect map
ProductsA product page with name, description, brand, SKU, barcode, price, currency and availability
Attributes and optionsTheir set and display on the product page are agreed during the audit and fixed in the estimate
ImagesA product gallery with zoom and sizes for different screens
Meta tags and SEO URLTitle, Description and H1 for every page and language, canonical URL
Design and themeA 1:1 look: header, menu, product page, footer, mobile version

The system builds Product and Offer structured data from the product fields, so the price, currency and availability that search engines read match what shoppers see in the storefront. The Russian, Ukrainian and English versions of the store each keep their own texts and meta tags in the new system.

How does a migration from OpenCart to Seo-Gen CMS work?

While we build the new store, OpenCart keeps taking orders, and shoppers never run into a half-empty catalog in the middle of the move. The move from OpenCart runs in four steps, and after each step the client checks the result and approves moving on to the next stage.

Timelines depend on the catalog size, the number of languages and the complexity of the theme, so we name them together with the estimate after the audit. We fit the switch date into the store's calendar, away from sales, high season and advertising campaigns.

01

Store audit and estimate

During the audit we review the OpenCart or ocStore version, the theme, installed extensions, the catalog structure, languages and SEO URL settings. We separately export every store URL, including the old variants with route and product_id, and mark the products and categories that bring in orders and traffic.

The audit ends with an estimate listing the data we move, the way attributes and options will appear, the extension tasks the system covers and the acceptable differences from the original. You pay for the OpenCart migration once, at the amount set in the estimate, and the monthly subscription then runs on whichever plan the owner picks.

02

Catalog, pages and 1:1 design

First we build the category structure, then create product pages and upload images, checking every product page against the original store page. Information pages and category texts move without rewriting, and meta tags are taken from the admin panel separately for each language.

We recreate the design 1:1 in the block editor, including the header, menu, product page, footer and mobile version. We move the header, footer and 404 page into global zones: change a phone number or a menu item once, and it updates on every page of the store.

03

Cart, orders and notifications

In its new home the store sells with Seo-Gen CMS tools: it has a catalog with categories, product pages, a cart and checkout. Every order lands in the admin panel, where a manager accepts and processes it, an email and a Telegram message announce each new order, and customers can pay for their purchase online.

Payment and shipping extensions from the old engine do not carry over to the new system, because they are written for another platform, and payment methods after the move are agreed during the audit. Past orders and the customer list can also move to the new site: the audit shows which of that data OpenCart holds, and the estimate lists what goes over.

04

Redirects, testing and launch

Before launch we load the redirect map, check every old URL and compare the new store with the original on desktop and mobile. A test order, forms, meta tags, canonical URLs and the sitemap are all checked before the domain is switched.

Switching the domain comes with DNS hints for the registrar right in the admin panel, and HTTPS for the store is set up by the system with no extra steps. In the first weeks we watch indexing and crawl error reports and fix a redirect whenever a URL with route or product_id leads to the wrong product.

What we actually did

Dental clinic · Kyiv and Chernihiv

+44% clicks from search

A domain with no history and a site on a website builder. We built the semantic core for both cities, reworked the landing pages and built the link profile from zero. In four months: 34.8k clicks, impressions 1.32 → 1.76M, DR 0 → 41.

E-commerce · international

+96% clicks in two months

A catalog of digital 3D models. We clustered the semantics, rebuilt the hub pages and fixed duplicates and indexing errors. Google users 247 → 532, CTR 2.4% → 4%.

Medical center · Ukraine

+68.75% visibility in the first month

Narrow visibility and a small semantic core at the start. Semantics, landing page structure, metadata and internal linking, then gradual link building.

How long does a migration from OpenCart take?

How long the move takes depends on the number of products, languages and theme customizations, and we can only name a timeline after the audit. Migrating a store with a small catalog is noticeably faster than moving a large multilingual store.

While the work goes on, shoppers place orders on the old OpenCart store as usual and see nothing of the preparations. We agree the domain switch date with the owner in advance, together with the estimate and the testing plan.

How much does it cost to move a store from OpenCart?

Moving an OpenCart store by hand starts at UAH 25,000, and the estimate gives the exact amount after we go through the catalog, theme and extensions. The price depends on catalog size, the number of attributes and options, theme complexity, the number of languages and the length of the redirect map.

Custom work requested by the clientUAH 600 per hour
Start subscriptionfrom UAH 990 per month per website
An OpenCart store from studiosbuild paid once, hosting and extensions separately

With an OpenCart store, bills for hosting, paid extensions and hourly support pile up over time on top of the one-off build. The Seo-Gen CMS subscription covers hosting, backups, updates and support in one payment, which is 20 % lower when you pay for a year.

What does the owner stop worrying about after moving to Seo-Gen CMS?

On OpenCart the store owner is responsible for the whole technical layer: the server, updates, backups and protection against hacking. After the move all this work passes to the agency and is included in the subscription on any plan.

The owner edits products, prices, texts, meta tags and redirects in the admin panel personally, and the agency hands over an export of that data on request at any time for free. If the store stops opening entirely, repair work starts at once, whatever plan is connected.

Answers to your questions

Can a store be moved from OpenCart automatically?

Seo-Gen CMS cannot import an OpenCart store automatically: its automatic import exists only for WordPress and has been verified on sites built with the DIVI theme. The Seo-Gen team moves products, categories, images and texts by hand, using a database copy and an export file.

Moving products from OpenCart by hand takes more time, but a specialist checks every product page against the old store. The estimate, agreed before any work starts, spells out which product fields will be carried over and where the new store may look different from the old one.

How do you keep store rankings after the move?

Once the store has moved, search engines have to recrawl its pages and process the redirects, so rankings may wobble for a short while after any engine change. A long drop is prevented by the redirect map, carried-over meta tags and canonical URLs on every page.

After launch we monitor indexing and crawl errors for the pages listed in the URL map. Should an old URL point to the wrong product, the redirect is corrected directly in the Seo-Gen CMS admin panel.

What happens to old product URLs?

We reproduce SEO URL keywords wherever possible and add a trailing slash, because the system keeps one URL format for every page. Technical URLs such as index.php?route=product/product&product_id=42 get a 301 redirect to the product page of the same item.

Shoppers arriving from old bookmarks or social media posts end up on the matching page of the new store. The 301 code tells search engines the product has moved for good, and over time the new URL replaces the address with route in search results.

Can you migrate a store running on ocStore?

Yes, moving from ocStore and other builds based on OpenCart follows the same order as moving from the original engine. During the audit we look separately at the build version, SEO URL extensions and theme customizations, because the URLs and database contents depend on them.

Heavily customized stores, where developers changed the core code for years, need more time to sort out the catalog. We account for such details in the estimate, so the price does not change after the migration begins.

What should be done with OpenCart extensions?

Extensions from the old engine do not carry over to Seo-Gen CMS, because their code is written for another platform. During the audit we list the extensions and look at the task each one handles, such as meta tags, SEO URL, sitemap, forms, filters or notifications.

Meta tags, canonical URLs, the sitemap, 301 redirects, structured data, forms and Telegram notifications work in the system out of the box. If a store feature needs custom work, it goes into the estimate as a separate line at UAH 600 per hour.

Moving from OpenCart to Seo-Gen CMS makes sense when supporting the engine, extensions and server takes more effort than growing the store. The Seo-Gen team moves the store by hand from UAH 25,000, with a 301 redirect map and a check of every page before the domain switch, and after launch the agency takes over hosting, system updates and backups.

More on: Moving Your Store from OpenCart to Seo-Gen CMS

How are OpenCart URLs structured?

URLs matter most when you migrate from OpenCart, because search engines, other websites and shoppers with bookmarks all know the store by them. Without configuration a product URL looks like index.php?route=product/product&product_id=42, and with a category in the path it looks like index.php?route=product/product&path=20_27&product_id=45, where the numbers are record IDs in the database.

Human-readable URLs are switched on with the Use SEO URL option, after which every product, category and page gets its own keyword for each language. Some stores enable SEO URL later, so both kinds of addresses live in the index, while ocStore builds and SEO URL extensions such as SEO Pro change their structure, so we study it during the audit.

301 redirect map

A redirect map is a table in which every old store URL is paired with its new address in Seo-Gen CMS. We keep the old URLs wherever they can be reproduced, and we send the rest through a 301 redirect to the same product or category, with no redirect chains.

URL in OpenCartURL in Seo-Gen CMS
index.php?route=product/product&product_id=42/laptops/macbook-pro/ via a 301 redirect
/laptops/macbook-pro (SEO URL without a slash)/laptops/macbook-pro/ with a trailing slash
index.php?route=product/category&path=20_27/laptops/ via a 301 redirect

The 301 rules live in the Seo-Gen CMS admin panel, so editing them takes no server access, no .htaccess file and none of the extensions OpenCart needed for this. The map stays with the client, who can use it to check any old store URL long after the move.

How do you export a catalog from OpenCart?

There is no automatic import from OpenCart into Seo-Gen CMS, so we move the product catalog using the data the store itself provides. Three sources are usually enough to export products from OpenCart and check the product pages, and we pick the right set during the audit:

  • a database backup made in System → Maintenance → Backup & Restore, which saves the selected tables to an SQL file;
  • the Export/Import Tool extension, which exports categories, products, options, attributes, filters and customers to an Excel file;
  • access to the admin panel, where we compare product pages, SEO URL keywords and meta tags with what shoppers see.

We take product images as an archive from the hosting, because the database only stores paths to the files. The built-in backup skips the admin user tables, and large databases on weak hosting often fail to export, so it can be easier to get a copy from the hosting provider.
