Answers to your questions
The questions about GEO we are asked most often. If yours is not here, write to us — we will answer in the same tone: no magic and no promises.
What is GEO promotion?
GEO promotion, or Generative Engine Optimization, encompasses efforts to increase website and brand visibility in generative search engines. The project includes technical accessibility of pages, content, expertise, external sources, and mention monitoring.
The goal of GEO is to increase a company's presence in responses from ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini, Perplexity, and other systems. This can be achieved through brand mentions, links, recommendations, or use of the page as a source.
How is GEO different from SEO?
SEO primarily measures rankings, impressions, clicks, and organic traffic from search engines. GEO also works with AI-based visibility, brand mentions, source citations, and other metrics related to generative responses.
The technical foundations of both areas are the same. GEO still requires indexable pages, proper website architecture, high-quality content, links, and proven company expertise.
Will GEO replace regular SEO?
Completely replacing SEO in the development of GEO makes no practical sense. Generative systems often use web sources, and their accessibility depends on technical and content factors that have long been part of traditional search engine optimization.
It's better to develop both areas within a single strategy. SEO is responsible for maintaining a stable search engine base, while GEO adds monitoring of generative search results, working with AI responses, and the brand's external information space.
Who needs GEO first of all?
Businesses whose clients choose by comparing: services, complex equipment, healthcare, law, education, B2B. These are exactly the questions people increasingly put to generative systems instead of leafing through ten tabs.
And separately — companies with a recognizable name: here the task is not only to appear in the answer but also to make sure what is said about you is true. A wrong statement in a popular system costs more than no mention at all.
Is it possible to promote a website in ChatGPT?
Yes, you can work on factors that improve a website's accessibility and quality as a source. OAI-SearchBot, the technical condition of pages, the expertise of the content, factual accuracy, and external brand mentions are all checked.
A specific mention in ChatGPT cannot be guaranteed, as the response is generated dynamically. Therefore, website promotion in neural networks is assessed based on a series of queries and visibility dynamics over a specific period.
What neural networks are taken into account in GEO promotion?
Depending on the project's audience, ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Claude, and other generative services are analyzed. Platform priority is determined by market and user demand.
There's no need to indiscriminately audit all existing systems. It's more beneficial for businesses to select services that are actually used by their audience and regularly monitor a stable set of commercial issues.
What is included in GEO website optimization?
GEO optimization includes an AI visibility audit, competitive analysis, technical SEO, accessibility checks for relevant search engines, content optimization, and work with external sources. Additionally, entities, authorship, and brand reputation are analyzed.
After implementing the changes, follow-up monitoring is conducted. The resulting data shows which topics have begun generating more mentions and where competitors continue to hold a significantly larger share of AI search results.
How long does GEO promotion take?
The time frame depends on the website's condition, competition, the company's visibility, and the speed of data updates on the specific platform. For a new project and an established brand, the timeframe can vary significantly, even with the same amount of technical work.
It's best to evaluate results through a series of measurements. The first appearance of a brand in a single response is interesting as a signal, but consistent visibility is confirmed by regular mentions across several related queries.
How do I check whether AI mentions my company?
We put together a list of queries for which you ought to be named: the service, the service plus a city, comparisons with competitors, “how to choose” and “how much does it cost” questions. That list is run across several platforms.
We record three things: whether the brand is mentioned, whose sites are cited as sources and whether the facts about the company are stated correctly. A single check proves nothing — the answers differ slightly every time, so the measurement can be repeated on a schedule in the same format.
How to check the results of GEO promotion?
AI Visibility, Brand Mentions, Source Citations, and Share of Voice are used for verification. Additionally, links from generative services, referral traffic, branded search, and commercial conversions are analyzed if the source of the request can be determined.
It's advisable to conduct measurements based on a fixed set of queries and competitors. This allows for comparison across periods and the separation of systemic changes from the usual variability of generative responses.
Find out what AI says about your company
Leave a request — we will put together the list of queries for which you ought to be named and run it across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot. A small volume we can show for free: the actual answers together with the sources they rely on. If there are many queries, that is separate work — we will agree the scope and the cost.
We reply within a business day. No newsletters and no “just checking in” calls.
He will look at the site himself instead of passing it to a manager.
More about GEO and AI answers
Users increasingly begin their search with a question to ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or another AI service. Instead of a list of websites, they receive a ready-made answer, a selection of options, a comparison of companies, or a specific product recommendation. For businesses, this creates another point of contact with a potential client, which must be considered alongside the regular search results.
GEO promotion helps increase a company's presence in these responses. Generative Engine Optimization covers the website, content, brand data, external mentions, and technical accessibility of materials for search and AI systems. The work takes into account ChatGPT Search, Google AI, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Claude, and other services that use web sources when generating responses.
What is GEO promotion and Generative Engine Optimization?
GEO promotion is a set of activities aimed at increasing the visibility of a website and brand in generative search. Generative Engine Optimization takes into account how AI systems find sources, compare facts, recognize companies, and generate responses to conversational user queries. The focus of this work remains an accessible website, understandable content, proven expertise, and a strong digital brand presence.
The results of GEO optimization can manifest themselves in various ways. The system can link to a page, cite content, name a company among suitable options, or use published information when making a recommendation. Therefore, AI visibility optimization is evaluated more broadly than simply assessing a site's position for a specific query.
How does search work in generative systems?
Generative search receives a user's query and determines what information is needed to provide a meaningful answer. The system can expand the original query, find multiple sources, compare the data, and produce a single result. Depending on the platform, the response may include links, source cards, company names, or citations from the retrieved materials.
For GEO search, comprehensive coverage of the topic is crucial. The page must answer the primary query and related questions, contain verifiable information, and have a clear structure. Semantic search works with context, so mechanically repeating a single phrase is less useful than consistently revealing entities, characteristics, and the relationships between them.
RAG and obtaining information from external sources
Retrieval-Augmented Generation, or RAG, describes an approach in which a language model obtains additional information from external sources before generating a response. These sources can include web pages, databases, documents, and other accessible materials. The specific architecture depends on the service, so it's wrong to assume that all large language models use the same retrieval mechanism.
This principle is practically important for GEO Generative Engine Optimization. When the system accesses external sources, the page quality, accessibility of information, and clarity of facts influence the likelihood of the material being used. Unique data, clear definitions, up-to-date statistics, and links to primary sources help the system more accurately interpret the page content.
Query fan-out and user query expansion
A single user question can touch on several aspects of a topic. Query fan-out refers to expanding the initial query into additional related areas that help the system gather enough information to answer. For example, a question about choosing an SEO agency might lead to a search for services, case studies, costs, reviews, the team's experience, and the company's specialization.
Therefore, optimization for AI search requires covering search intent more completely. Content should cover related questions without artificially increasing volume or repetition. A good topic structure helps AI determine which information relates to price, work process, results, technical aspects, or the company's expertise.
GEO, AI SEO, AIO, and LLMO – What's the Difference?
In the field of generative search, several terms are used side by side: GEO, AI SEO, AI Search Optimization, AIO, LLM Optimization, and LLMO. Their meanings overlap, as they all describe work with content and brand visibility in systems powered by artificial intelligence. The differences are often related to the emphasis of a particular methodology or the name of the service.
GEO SEO typically encompasses a full range of tasks: a website's technical foundation, content, entities, external sources, reputation, and AI Visibility monitoring. AI SEO can be used as a broader commercial term. LLM SEO and LLMO more often focus on how large language models perceive, associate, and use information about a website or brand.
What is AI Search Optimization?
AI Search Optimization is the optimization of a digital presence for search results generated by artificial intelligence. This work includes AI response analysis, page preparation, technical SEO, content improvement, and growing external mentions. AI search optimization services typically complement a company's regular search strategy and utilize the website's overall technical foundation.
An AI search agency also analyzes the competitive environment within generative search results. Specialists check which brands appear in AI answers, which websites are cited, and what types of materials are used as sources. Based on this data, an AI visibility optimization plan is developed for priority services, products, and information clusters.
What is LLM Optimization and LLMO?
LLM Optimization focuses on how clearly company information is presented for Large Language Models. LLMO optimization includes content, site structure, entity information, authorship, external publications, and data consistency across different platforms. The goal of LLM optimization services is to improve the quality of a company's digital footprint across topics related to its products and services.
LLM SEO services also consider the search engine accessibility of pages. If important content is blocked from indexing, loads with errors, or contains inconsistent information, LLM SEO will be limited. Therefore, LLM SEO is usually considered in conjunction with technical SEO, content marketing, and website authority development.
How is GEO different from classic SEO?
SEO and GEO use a common baseline but measure visibility in different search scenarios. Traditional SEO typically focuses on rankings, impressions, organic traffic, and conversions from search results. GEO optimization additionally analyzes brand presence in AI-driven search results, content citations, and the share of mentions relative to competitors.
The object of analysis also differs. With standard SEO, the primary focus is on the website and its rankings. GEO website promotion requires examining external publications, company profiles, expert materials, reviews, and other sources that the system can use to verify brand information.
| Criterion | SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| The main goal | Increased visibility, organic traffic, and search conversions | Increased presence, mentions, and citations in AI responses |
| Main platforms | Google and other search engines | ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Claude |
| Object of work | Website, content, links and technical factors | Website, brand, entities, content and external information field |
| Query type | Classic search phrases and questions | Search, conversational, and complex multi-part queries |
| Key metrics | Positions, clicks, impressions, traffic, and conversions | AI Visibility, Brand Mentions, Source Citations and Share of Voice |
This difference impacts the promotion strategy. GEO AI SEO requires tracking the sources that generative systems regularly use and comparing your own presence with competitors. At the same time, technical SEO, a strong link profile, useful content, and proper indexing continue to influence the project's overall search visibility.
GEO instead of SEO – is it possible to abandon traditional promotion?
Abandoning traditional SEO when switching to GEO is not practical. Generative systems often use data from the web, and the availability of this data depends on indexing, the technical condition of the pages, and the quality of the content. Errors in robots.txt, canonical, HTTP codes, or JavaScript rendering can prevent search engines from properly retrieving website content.
GEO instead of SEO also doesn't address domain authority and project structure. Sustainable search visibility requires clear pages, internal linking, expert content, and external trust signals. GEO SEO AI extends this work to an AI environment and adds dedicated monitoring of citations, mentions, and recommendations.
Why does a business need AI search engine promotion?
When users receive a ready-made answer from AI, part of the usual search results journey is shortened. They can see several companies at once, compare options, or refine their purchase parameters in a conversation. AI-powered search promotion helps brands be present at this stage of the decision process and gain additional exposure to potential customers.
This effect is especially noticeable in niches where users spend a long time comparing offers. Financial services, healthcare, SaaS, B2B, education, legal services, and complex products often require multiple follow-up questions. Promotion in AI search helps companies gain a presence in the information environment the system uses to generate these responses.
Increasing AI-powered brand visibility
AI Visibility shows how frequently a brand appears in answers for a selected set of queries. For analysis, a list of commercial and informational questions is created, after which mentions of the company, links to its website, and its position relative to other brands are recorded. This approach helps evaluate AI promotion without tying it to a single platform or query.
Optimizing AI visibility starts with a baseline. It's important to understand which topics the company already covers, where competitors are ahead, and which sources are most frequently used by generative systems. After implementing changes, repeat monitoring is conducted to show the dynamics for the same keyword groups.
Brand mentions and citations
Brand presence in AI responses takes several forms. The system can mention a company without attribution, include it in a list of recommendations, use a page as a source, or cite specific content. These scenarios have different values, so it's best to consider Brand Mentions and Source Citations separately.
Brand promotion in AI is also linked to the quality of the context. Mentioning a company in an inappropriate topic or outdated content may not produce the desired effect. The analysis takes into account the content of the response, the brands mentioned alongside it, the sources used, and the user's search query that prompted the company's appearance.
An additional channel for acquiring clients
Traffic from AI services can already be recorded in web analytics when a user clicks a link in a response. Some of the influence remains indirect: a person learns the company name, later searches for the brand on Google, or contacts it in other ways. Therefore, evaluating promotion in AI systems based solely on referral traffic is insufficient for a commercial project.
For businesses, it's useful to link AI Visibility to requests, branded search, and the dynamics of direct visits. If the analytics system allows you to identify the source of the request, the data can be included in the overall attribution model. This way, website promotion in AI receives clear business metrics along with visibility indicators.
Where does GEO promotion work?
GEO website promotion encompasses generative services used for search, comparison, and recommendations. Key platforms include ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, and Claude. The choice of platforms for a specific project depends on the market, audience, and search demand.
A single approach cannot be applied to all systems, as the methods for obtaining and displaying information differ. GEO in AI is built on a common, high-quality website base and then takes into account the specific features of individual platforms. For a commercial project, several priority services and a set of queries are typically selected for regular monitoring.
Website promotion in ChatGPT
Website promotion in ChatGPT begins with checking the content's accessibility for OpenAI's search crawlers. If a website owner wants to participate in ChatGPT search results, the OAI-SearchBot must not be blocked by robots.txt rules. However, open access alone does not guarantee a page's appearance in a specific answer.
Further work focuses on the quality of the source. The page should contain clear information, up-to-date facts, genuine authorship, and sufficient context on the topic. Website promotion in AI also requires checking whether the brand information on the website itself, industry platforms, and other available sources is consistent.
Optimization for Google AI
Optimization for Google AI relies on a website's regular search accessibility. For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, indexable pages, technical clarity, useful content, internal structure, and correct structured data remain relevant. Google does not require any specific mandatory markup exclusively for AI responses.
Google AI GEO also requires a full explanation of the topic and associated user intent. The page should provide sufficient information for a complex question, rather than being limited to a short SEO text. For commercial pages, service specifications, stages of work, limitations, real-world examples, and answers to frequently asked questions are helpful.
Promotion in other neural networks
Neural network promotion covers Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Claude, and other services that may use web search or their own data acquisition mechanisms. Sources and citation frequencies vary, so a GEO specialist verifies the actual search results for each priority platform.
To promote a brand in neural networks, a single consistent set of company data and separate platform monitoring are used. This approach helps identify discrepancies: one service may regularly cite a website, while another more frequently uses external articles or aggregators. These differences are taken into account in the subsequent work plan.
What is included in GEO website promotion?
GEO website promotion begins with an analysis of the project's current state. Specialists check the website, AI search results, competitors, content, and external references. Afterward, a list of technical, content, and reputational tasks is compiled, prioritized by page and business area.
Within geo services, work is divided between several areas. The website must be searchable, the page content must clearly explain the topic, company information must be consistent across sources, and external presence must confirm the brand's real experience and specialization.
Analysis of current AI visibility
The first stage involves generating a set of questions that a potential audience might use to search for a service, product, or company. The frequency of brand mentions, the presence of links to the website, the context of the recommendation, and the rankings of key competitors are all checked. A baseline AI Visibility score is recorded for each business line.
Additionally, the sources that appear most frequently in responses are analyzed. These may include corporate websites, articles, catalogs, media outlets, forums, ratings, or expert publications. This analysis reveals where the brand is already present and which areas of the digital information space require further development.
Competitor Analysis in AI Search
Competitive analysis helps us understand why some companies appear in generative search results more often than others. We examine the pages cited by systems, their content structure, external publications, expert profiles, and reviews. We also compare the sites' topical coverage for commercial and informational queries.
Following the analysis, a gap map is created. It reveals topics where competitors have stronger sources, better expert representation, or more independent mentions. This data is used to develop a GEO marketing AI strategy and select priority pages for optimization.
Technical website optimization for AI search
The technical part of GEO is closely related to a standard SEO audit. First, we ensure that important pages are accessible to search engines and load without critical errors. Then, we check the restrictions set for individual AI crawlers, the correctness of structured data, and content rendering features.
AI SEO optimization doesn't require a separate website version for neural networks. The main goal is to ensure the required information opens reliably, has a clear URL, and doesn't conflict with duplicates or incorrect canonicals. After technical verification, you can move on to content and external signals.
Indexing and accessibility for search robots
The audit begins with robots.txt, meta robots, sitemap.xml, HTTP codes, canonical, and duplicate URLs. It also checks whether key page elements are accessible without JavaScript rendering errors. If important text appears only after complex client-side loading, search engines may process it less predictably.
Special attention is paid to page statuses and internal linking. Commercial URLs must be accessible from the logical site structure and have correct canonical addresses. Erroneous redirects, redirect chains, and blocked sections are corrected before working with AI visibility.
Accessibility for AI crawlers
Some AI services use their own search bots. For ChatGPT Search, OAI-SearchBot and the rules set by the website owner in robots.txt must be taken into account. Blocking such a bot may limit the pages' ability to appear in OpenAI search results.
The company's policy on access to various bots is taken into account during the review. There's no need to automatically allow every AI crawler, as the website owner's goals may vary. A decision is made separately for search accessibility, model training, and other content usage.
Structured data
Schema.org helps search engines more accurately recognize page types and individual entities. For commercial projects, Organization, LocalBusiness, Product, BreadcrumbList, Article, Person, and other suitable types can be used. The markup should match the actual data the user sees on the page.
There is no specific GEO Schema or mandatory AI markup for Google. Structured data is added where it is appropriate for the content type and supported by search engines. Fake ratings, reviews, prices, and specifications must not be added to JSON-LD.
llms.txt
The llms.txt file is being discussed as an additional way to provide structured website information to language models. Support for this format depends on specific systems, so it shouldn't be considered a mandatory part of GEO optimization. Before implementing it, it's important to understand the intended purpose of the file.
For Google, the presence of llms.txt does not provide any specific advantage in AI Mode or AI Overviews. Priority remains on accessible, indexable pages, a correct structure, and high-quality content. Therefore, implementing the experimental file should not replace a technical SEO audit of the site.
Optimizing content for AI search
Optimizing a website for AI requires clear and meaningful content. The page should include definitions, facts, characteristics, limitations, examples, and answers to real audience questions. If statistics are used, the source must be cited and the data must be kept up-to-date.
Structured content is easier to divide into independent semantic fragments. H2-H4 headings, tables, lists, and short logical blocks are used for this purpose. GEO optimization, however, isn't about artificially fragmenting the text: each section should provide a comprehensive answer to a specific user question.
Expertise and E-E-A-T
Expertise is confirmed by specific information about the author and the company. Expert profiles, work experience, case studies, publications, certificates, and links to verifiable sources are helpful. E-E-A-T is used as a concept for assessing quality and trustworthiness, so it cannot be translated into a conventional numerical value.
For medical, financial, and other sensitive topics, reliability requirements are especially high. Materials must have clear authorship and up-to-date sources. If a specialist comments on a controversial issue, it is advisable to include their name, position, and actual experience in the relevant field.
Working with entities and the brand
Search engines perceive a company through a set of related entities: name, services, employees, products, addresses, and external profiles. Information must be consistent across the main website and external platforms. Inconsistencies in the name, contact information, or specialization complicate brand recognition.
Working with Entities includes checking Organization, Person, Product, and other entities related to the project. For some tasks, the Knowledge Graph and company mention frequency are also analyzed. This check helps identify missing or conflicting data.
Working with external sources and brand mentions
External publications help confirm information about a company from independent sources. GEO uses industry media, expert articles, directories, interviews, ratings, and specialized platforms. When selecting a source, its quality, relevance, audience, and actual searchability are taken into account.
Mass posting of similar texts is not beneficial and can degrade the overall link profile. Priority is given to materials with meaningful information about the company, its experience, or its product. PR publications, expert commentary, and natural link building should complement the website's content.
Optimizing Brand Reputation in an AI-Powered Environment
Reputation influences the information a user receives when searching for a company. AI can find reviews, discussions, ratings, and publications on third-party platforms. Therefore, brand promotion in neural networks includes checking the relevance and tone of such mentions.
We work with real sources and factual information. Negative reviews should not be covered up with fictitious comments or artificial ratings. It's far more effective to correct the underlying causes of complaints, respond to users, and maintain up-to-date company profiles on relevant platforms.
How does GEO promotion work?
The GEO agency begins by documenting the current situation so that future changes can be measured. The website, AI visibility, competitors, and brand mentions are checked. Following the audit, tasks are distributed across technical, content, and external areas, taking into account page priority.
Further work proceeds in iterations. After implementing changes, AI responses and regular search metrics are re-checked. This cycle helps separate real visibility changes from the random fluctuations that regularly occur in generative systems.
Stage 1. GEO audit
A GEO audit includes a technical website diagnostic, content verification, and an analysis of the company's presence in generative search results. A list of target questions is generated, competitors, cited sources, and the context of mentions are recorded. The project's regular search visibility is also checked.
The result is an initial map of problems and opportunities. It shows which pages require technical improvements, which topics are covered less effectively than competitors, and where external confirmation of expertise is missing. This data becomes the basis for further planning.
Stage 2. Development of a GEO strategy
The strategy defines priority platforms, queries, pages, and sources. For a commercial website, the key services, categories, and topics on which users compare companies before contacting one are typically identified. A list of technical and content tasks is then compiled.
A Generative Engine Optimization agency also considers external promotion opportunities. For each topic, appropriate publication types, experts, and platforms are selected. This approach helps distribute budgets across the website, content, PR, and other channels without indiscriminate placements.
Stage 3. Technical and content optimization
Following the audit, technical obstacles preventing search engines from retrieving content are addressed. Key landing pages, articles, FAQs, and other materials are then refined. Website optimization for AI is performed taking into account the actual search intent of each page.
Content is updated where information is insufficient or outdated. Verifiable facts, examples, tables, and expert commentary are added. Duplications, artificial repetition of semantics, and fragments that don't help the user solve the problem are eliminated.
Stage 4. Strengthening the brand's external presence
External presence includes publications, mentions, expert profiles, and industry platforms. The placement plan is developed based on the business's topic and the quality of the sources. For B2B projects, professional media may carry more weight, while for local businesses, specialized directories and regional sources are more important.
Brand promotion in AI requires consistent information across multiple resources. The company name, specialization, and key information must be consistent. Therefore, external publications are verified alongside the brand's official pages and profiles.
Stage 5. AI visibility monitoring
After implementing the changes, the selected questions are re-checked. New mentions, answers that disappeared, links, and Share of Voice changes are recorded. To ensure accurate comparison, the same set of topics and comparable testing conditions are used.
Monitoring needs to be regular, as generative responses can change even without editing the website. Models, indexes, and data sources are updated. A series of measurements provides a more useful picture than a single screenshot with a company mention.
Stage 6. Scaling
After receiving the initial stable data, GEO expands to include additional categories, services, and information topics. Priority is given to areas where visibility is already growing or where there is clear commercial potential. New query groups and pages are then added.
For international projects, the strategy is scaled separately by language and region. Translating a single page is not enough, as search demand, competitors, and sources vary across markets. Each language version is tested for its own AI responses and search results.
How to measure the effectiveness of GEO promotion?
GEO results cannot be reduced to a single position, as the generative response is generated dynamically. The assessment uses a set of metrics that capture the presence of the brand, website, and content based on the selected semantics. This data is compared with competitors and standard web analytics.
Key metrics include AI Visibility, Brand Mentions, Source Citations, Share of Voice, and referrals from AI services. For commercial projects, leads and sales are added to these if the source of the request can be reliably determined.
AI Visibility
AI Visibility shows the proportion of queries for which a brand is present in the checked answers. For this calculation, a stable set of questions and platforms is generated in advance. The frequency of company mentions and their dynamics relative to previous periods are then recorded.
This metric is useful for comparing business lines. For example, a brand may frequently appear for informational queries but be virtually absent from commercial ones. In this case, the strategy should be adjusted to focus on pages and sources related to service selection.
Brand Mentions
Brand Mentions takes into account instances where the AI mentions a company in the response text. When analyzing, it's important to capture the context of the mention, as the same number of mentions can have different values. Recommendations among market leaders and random mentions in reference snippets are evaluated separately.
The tone and factual accuracy of the response are also checked. If the system uses outdated information, it may be due to an old external source or incomplete information on the website. Such cases are included in the reputation and content management plan.
Source Citations
Source Citations show how often a website's pages are used as a source. For some platforms, these are links directly in the response; for others, they are a separate list of sources. This metric helps identify materials that the generative system already trusts on a particular topic.
After this, the common characteristics of such pages are analyzed. The structure, depth of topic coverage, authorship, unique data, and external links are checked. The patterns identified can be used in the preparation of other materials, while maintaining their individual structure.
Share of Voice
Share of Voice reflects a brand's presence relative to competitors for a selected set of questions. If a company appears significantly less frequently than its main competitors out of 100 relevant responses, this indicates a gap in AI visibility. This metric helps assess a business's relative position.
To ensure accurate comparison, a competitor list should be established in advance and periodically reviewed. New players that aren't in the typical SEO top lists may appear in the generative results. Such companies also become the subject of competitive analysis.
Traffic from AI services
Some AI platforms transmit referral traffic, which can be seen in web analytics systems. In GA4, it's recommended to highlight such sources in a separate report or channel group. This helps track page visits, user behavior, and subsequent conversions.
However, some interactions end within the AI service without clicking through. Zero-click scenarios are especially common for informational queries. Therefore, the lack of significant referral traffic does not in itself prove a lack of brand visibility.
Leads and Conversions
For a commercial project, the final assessment should take into account leads and sales. If a visit from AI can be identified, the source is associated with the corresponding conversion. For indirect conversions, branded searches, direct visits, and inquiries related to AI recommendations are additionally analyzed.
Not every change can be attributed precisely to GEO. Therefore, the data is evaluated alongside SEO, advertising, PR, and seasonality. This approach reduces the risk of attributing a result from multiple channels to a single activity.
Who is GEO promotion suitable for?
GEO is especially useful for companies whose customers compare multiple options and ask complex questions before making a purchase. These include online stores, SaaS, B2B, healthcare, financial services, education, law firms, IT, manufacturers, and expert services.
Local businesses can also benefit from AI Search Optimization if users search for services through conversational queries. For such projects, local mentions, company information, reviews, and regional sources are additionally checked. Priority is determined by actual demand, not industry per se.
When should you start GEO optimization?
The first sign is the appearance of competitors in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or Google AI search results for commercially important questions. GEO optimization of a website is also relevant when a significant portion of demand consists of comparison, consulting, and informational queries.
It makes sense to begin this work as SEO develops, rather than waiting for the audience to fully transition to AI-powered search. An early audit helps understand current visibility and build a measurement history. Even with little traffic from AI, the company gets data on which sources and competitors are already occupying prominent positions.
How long does it take to see the results of GEO promotion?
There's no fixed timeframe for GEO. The speed of change depends on the technical state of the site, brand awareness, competition, the frequency of source updates, and the specifics of the particular AI platform. A new page and an established domain can gain visibility at completely different rates.
The first changes sometimes appear after re-crawling and updating sources, but a single mention cannot be considered a sustainable result. A series of repeated measurements is needed for evaluation. The more competitive the topic, the more important regular content updates and a strong digital presence are.
Why should GEO promotion be combined with SEO?
SEO creates the technical and content foundation of a website, which is then used by GEO. Indexing, URL structure, internal linking, page quality, and external links remain important. Without this foundation, optimization for AI search will be limited by the website's own issues.
GEO adds dedicated workflows for AI Visibility, external mentions, and generative search results. Combining SEO and GEO provides a unified plan in which site changes simultaneously take into account both organic and AI search. This reduces duplication of effort between teams.
GEO promotion at Seo-Gen
At Seo-Gen, our work begins with a website analysis and real-world generative search results relevant to the project's topic. We check the technical condition, semantics, content, competitors, and external sources. We then create a task list with clear priorities, rather than a one-size-fits-all set of edits for any business.
The project may include an SEO audit, competitive analysis, technical optimization, content, link building, PR publications, reputation management, and analytics. A GEO agency must have a comprehensive view of the company's digital presence, as isolated edits to a single page rarely reflect the actual state of the brand in AI search.
Each project has its own set of metrics. We can track AI Visibility, Brand Mentions, Source Citations, Share of Voice, and clicks from available AI sources. These metrics are compared with regular SEO traffic and the website's commercial results.
Check your brand's visibility in ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini, and other generative systems. Get a GEO audit of your website and competitors from Seo-Gen and a work plan for priority areas.
GEO promotion helps systematically manage how a website and brand are represented in generative search. Results depend on the technical foundation, content quality, expertise, external sources, and the company's actual presence in the information space.
It's best to start with a GEO audit and recording current AI Visibility. After that, you can identify priority pages, queries, and platforms, distribute tasks between SEO, content, and external promotion, and track changes using clear metrics.
