Setting up LinkedIn Ads

LinkedIn Ads helps you reach a professional audience based on job title, industry, specialist level, company, geography, and other characteristics. This approach is especially relevant in B2B, where purchasing decisions are often made by multiple employees, and the journey from initial contact to sale can take weeks or months.

What are LinkedIn Ads and how do LinkedIn ads work?

Setting up LinkedIn Ads begins with understanding the product, the ICP, and the target action the business expects from the ad. For one company, this action might be a request for a consultation, while for another, it might be registering for a product demo, filling out a form, meeting with a manager, or a qualified lead entering the CRM.

LinkedIn Ads is the advertising system of the professional social network LinkedIn, where ads can be shown to audiences based on business and professional characteristics. Advertisers set marketing objectives, select user segments, determine budgets, place ads, and track subsequent visitor actions.

Advertising is auctioned, so there's no single rate for all companies. The final cost is influenced by geography, the selected audience, competition for impressions, the ad format, the bidding strategy, the ad quality, and the user action expected by the system.

In LinkedIn Campaign Manager, you can separate audiences and advertising objectives across individual campaigns. This approach yields cleaner data and helps you understand which job titles, industries, markets, or offers are actually driving leads.

What kind of business is LinkedIn Ads suitable for?

LinkedIn paid ads are most often used by companies seeking to reach specialists, executives, and decision-makers. The platform is suitable for B2B advertising, SaaS, IT, software development, consulting, financial services, corporate education, industrial business, recruitment, and other industries with a professional target audience.

This channel is especially attractive to companies that sell products with a high average order value or operate with a long sales cycle. In such projects, a small volume of high-quality inquiries can be more valuable than a significant flow of cheap clicks from users with no real need.

Using LinkedIn Ads also makes sense when entering new international markets. Campaigns can be divided by country, industry, company type, and specialist role to avoid mixing different segments within a single advertising campaign.

When might LinkedIn paid ads be ineffective?

LinkedIn isn't always suitable for projects targeting a broad mass audience and having a low average order value. The cost per contact with the professional segment can be higher than with channels designed for mass B2C traffic.

Problems also arise when a company launches ads without a clear ICP, a proper landing page, and a well-established lead processing system. Even precise targeting can't compensate for a weak offer, a slow response from managers, or a lack of a clear next step after a user clicks through.

Before launching, it's worth checking the readiness of the sales department and analytics. If the company doesn't distinguish between leads, MQLs, SQLs, and actual sales, the campaign will have to be evaluated solely based on advertising metrics, which don't reflect the final quality of the acquired audience.

What's included in the LinkedIn Ads setup service?

LinkedIn Ads services include advertising account preparation, audience analysis, campaign structure development, tracking setup, ad preparation, testing, and optimization. The scope of work depends on the client's product, geography, number of segments, and existing data.

Before launching, we examine the company's offering, current funnel, lead sources, and customer characteristics. We then determine who needs to be reached with advertising, which action should be considered the primary conversion, and which audiences should be tested separately.

The LinkedIn Ads agency needs to see the user's journey after a click. Therefore, when preparing a campaign, they consider landing pages, CRM, forms, UTM tags, and other data sources that help connect the advertising contact with the final result.

Product and target audience analysis

The work begins with a description of the ICP and specific target audience segments. We determine the companies' industries, size, geography, specialist positions, seniority, job function, and the potential role of each individual employee in the decision-making process.

For B2B lead generation, a description like "IT company director" is usually insufficient. A CFO, CEO, and head of development may all work at the same company, but the reasons for focusing on the product and the arguments for each specialist will differ.

After analysis, the audience is divided into segments that can be compared. This simplifies A/B testing and reveals where the cost per qualified lead aligns with business economics, and where advertising budgets are wasted without sufficient results.

Preparing your ad account and Campaign Manager

Before launch, access rights, the advertising account, the connection to the corporate LinkedIn page, and user settings are checked. Special attention is paid to billing, account structure, and the rights of employees who will be working with advertising and analytics.

A clear advertising campaign structure is created in Campaign Manager. Names should help quickly identify the market, audience, goal, and hypothesis being tested, as a chaotic structure significantly complicates analysis after several weeks of active work.

At this stage, the readiness of the LinkedIn Insight Tag, conversion tracking, and other conversion reporting methods is also checked. If the data is inaccurate, further optimization will be based on an incomplete picture and may lead to inaccurate budget allocation.

Development of advertising campaign structure

The structure depends on the number of markets, audiences, and commercial objectives. It usually doesn't make sense to combine executives from large companies and mid-level specialists from small businesses into one audience if the product offerings and value proposition differ for these groups.

Campaigns can be categorized by geography, company size, company industry, job title, job function, or seniority. For large B2B projects, Account-Based Marketing is also used, where advertising is targeted to a pre-defined list of target companies.

Separate campaigns are also created for different stages of the funnel. A user who is seeing a brand for the first time and a visitor who has already researched the product on the website are in different situations and require different advertising messages.

Splitting campaigns by audience

Audiences can be built around specific industries, company sizes, job titles, and employee seniority levels. This segmentation helps compare cost per contact and subsequent lead quality without mixing different user types.

Matched Audiences are used for some projects. Campaigns can include pre-defined lists of companies or contacts, and retargeting can be created for users who have already interacted with your website, videos, forms, or other advertising materials.

Once the data has been collected, weak segments can be disabled or reworked. Budgets are then transferred to campaigns that confirm acceptable cost per lead and sufficient lead quality.

Separating campaigns by marketing objectives

The marketing objective should be aligned with the actual stage of the funnel. Reach-focused scenarios are suitable for introducing the audience to the brand, while lead generation or conversion-focused strategies are chosen for reaching users who are ready to provide contact information.

It's not advisable to evaluate every campaign using a single metric. Awareness advertising and Lead Gen Forms campaigns will have different objectives, so setting identical expectations for CTR, CPL, or conversion rate can lead to incorrect conclusions.

Before launch, key KPIs are identified. For one campaign, the key metric will be the cost per qualified lead, while for another, it will be the number of completed forms, the number of meetings, or the advertising's contribution to the generated pipeline.

Gennadii, Lead SEO Specialist, Seo-Gen
I start setting up LinkedIn Ads by defining the ICP and target conversion. In B2B, an overly broad audience quickly exhausts the budget, while an overly narrow audience limits the data volume. Therefore, we first identify the companies and professionals involved in the purchase, then divide them into segments and select an offer. I consider the cost and quality of a lead capable of converting into a real deal to be the most important metric.

How does LinkedIn Ads setup and launch work?

The work is structured in stages so that the audience, analytics, goals, and evaluation criteria are clear before launch. This process reduces technical errors and helps quickly identify the cause of poor results if one hypothesis is not confirmed.

First, the commercial objectives and audience structure are defined, followed by the ad account, tracking, campaigns, and ads. Then, tests are launched, initial data is collected, and step-by-step campaign optimization begins.

The table shows the workflow, but the number of tests varies within each project. A campaign in one market with two audiences requires a different structure than an international launch with dozens of segments and multiple offers.

How much does LinkedIn Ads cost?

LinkedIn Ads costs can't be reduced to a single cost per click or per thousand impressions. Advertising is auction-based, so costs vary depending on the audience, geography, competition, advertising objective, chosen format, and bidding strategy.

Therefore, the cost of LinkedIn Ads for two companies in the same industry may differ. One company works with a broad audience across several markets, while the other competes for a narrow list of executives at large organizations, where the cost per contact will be determined differently.

Search queries like "cost for LinkedIn Ads" and "LinkedIn Ads costs" typically stem from the desire to determine the required budget in advance. Calculating these requires knowing the market, target job titles, number of segments, expected conversions, and minimum testing period.

What determines LinkedIn Ads cost?

Costs are influenced by geography and competition for a specific professional audience. Segments of executives in popular B2B niches may have a completely different price than a broader group of specialists in a less competitive market.

Ad quality, format, CTR, landing page, and the chosen campaign objective all matter. However, a low CPC doesn't guarantee profitable advertising if clicks don't translate into relevant leads.

After launch, cost should be considered alongside CPL, MQL and SQL, customer acquisition cost, and the advertising contribution to sales. This approach demonstrates channel economics better than individual cost per click.

The advertising budget and the cost of agency services are different expenses.

The advertising budget is paid for placing ads within LinkedIn. Its size is determined individually and depends on the market, audience, number of campaigns, and planned testing duration.

The cost of LinkedIn Ads services covers specialist work: analysis, Campaign Manager setup, structure preparation, tracking, launch, analytics, and subsequent management. These costs should not be confused with the amount directly spent by the advertising platform.

Before launching, we assess the proposed project structure and scope of work. The client receives a clear breakdown of the advertising budget and agency costs, allowing for independent planning of expenses.

Why should you trust Seo-Gen with your LinkedIn Ads setup?

Seo-Gen builds an advertising campaign around a specific product, market, and target audience. Before launch, we analyze the ICP, company segments, the roles of the parties involved, the commercial proposal, and the current analytics system.

The work includes setting up an advertising account, campaign structure, audiences, conversion tracking, UTM, ad creatives, launch, and subsequent optimization. Reports are linked to project goals, so the discussion goes beyond impressions and clicks.

For B2B projects, we specifically assess lead quality. If an advertising campaign generates leads that are regularly rejected by the sales department, we adjust the targeting, offer, or user acquisition logic.

LinkedIn Ads Agency is especially useful when testing multiple markets and audiences simultaneously. Its systematic structure helps maintain clear statistics, control costs, and quickly eliminate hypotheses that aren't supported by the data.

What does the client get?

After setup, the client receives a pre-configured advertising account, a logical campaign structure, audiences, and configured events for tracking targeted actions. Ads and rules for further data analysis are also prepared.

During ongoing management, the client receives information on costs, traffic, conversions, and lead quality. With a CRM, advertising data can be compared with subsequent lead qualification and progression through the funnel.

The result is a manageable advertising system that can be tested and scaled. New audiences and markets can be added without disrupting the existing structure or losing accumulated statistics.

What is required from the client to launch?

To get started, you'll need access to your company page and advertising account, along with information about your product, priority markets, and current customers. If you already have an ICP description or a database of target companies, this data will help you prepare your segmentation faster.

Information on landing pages, analytics, and CRM systems will also be required. If branded materials are available, the client will provide logos, images, videos, and brand guidelines, which must be taken into account when developing advertising creatives.

Before launch, the advertising budget, key KPIs, and request processing procedures are agreed upon. This helps evaluate the campaign against pre-defined criteria, rather than changing expectations after the initial results.

Answers to your questions

How much does LinkedIn Ads cost?

The price is determined through an advertising auction and depends on the market, audience, marketing objective, format, and bidding strategy. There is no universal CPC or CPM that suits all advertisers, so the cost cannot be determined in advance without initial data.

To calculate the budget, it's necessary to understand the target audience's geography, job titles, segment size, and number of hypotheses. After launch, the forecast is refined based on actual campaign performance and the quality of inquiries received.

What budget do I need to run LinkedIn Ads?

The budget should allow for testing selected segments and obtaining data for comparison. If a small amount is divided among a large number of campaigns, individual audiences may not generate enough data to draw reliable conclusions.

The budget is calculated based on the market, number of audiences, goals, and testing duration. The cost of specialist labor is factored in separately, as LinkedIn advertising expenses and agency services are separate budget items.

Who is LinkedIn Ads suitable for?

Advertising is most suitable for B2B companies, SaaS, IT, recruitment, consulting, professional education, and other projects that serve a business audience. The ability to segment users by company, job title, function, and professional level is especially useful.

For a mass-market, low-cost B2C product, the channel may be less suitable. Before launching, it's important to compare the estimated cost per contact with the product's economics and other available customer acquisition sources.

What targeting options are available in LinkedIn Ads?

Audiences can be built by geography, company, industry, company size, job title, job function, seniority, professional experience, skills, and other available parameters. The specific set of filters depends on the platform's capabilities and the selected market.

Matched Audiences and remarketing scenarios are also used. These help you work with your own lists and users who have already interacted with your website or your advertising materials.

Can LinkedIn Ads be used for lead generation?

Yes, LinkedIn Ads is suitable for B2B lead generation through landing pages and Lead Gen Forms. An advertising campaign can direct users to a form, consultation, registration, demo request, or other targeted action.

Lead quality depends on segmentation, offer, and subsequent qualification. Therefore, the number of completed forms should be analyzed along with MQLs, SQLs, meetings, and sales, if the company collects such data.

How are LinkedIn leads and conversions tracked?

LinkedIn Insight Tag, conversion tracking, UTM tags, and CRM data are used for tracking. Projects with the appropriate technical infrastructure can integrate server-side conversion reporting methods, including the Conversion API.

Before launching, it's important to verify that events are being transmitted correctly. If a conversion is recorded twice or not at all, advertising reports will present an inaccurate picture and hinder further optimization.

How does working with a LinkedIn Ads agency differ from launching your own?

The agency takes on product analysis, audience segmentation, campaign structure, tracking, ad preparation, and systematic post-launch data management. This is especially useful for multiple markets and a large number of B2B segments.

Launching independently is also possible if the company has an in-house specialist with experience in Campaign Manager, analytics, and advertising. The main issue is the availability of time and expertise for regular testing, lead quality checks, and budget adjustments.

Ask a question

Setting up LinkedIn Ads makes sense when a company understands its target audience and can evaluate results beyond ad clicks. The channel provides the greatest value to B2B projects that need access to specific professional segments, companies, and decision-makers.

Seo-Gen configures campaign structures, audiences, analytics, and ads, and after launch, it verifies actual results and lead quality. This process provides the foundation for further optimization and scaling without indiscriminately increasing your advertising budget.

More on: Setting up LinkedIn Ads

Setting up LinkedIn Ads targeting

Targeting is considered one of the main reasons for using LinkedIn in B2B. The platform leverages professional profile characteristics, allowing audiences to be built around job titles, functions, industries, companies, experience, education, and other business attributes.

However, too broad an audience reduces the test's accuracy, while too narrow an audience limits the number of available impressions. The optimal segment size is determined by the specific market, product, and campaign objective.

Before launch, the logic of each filter is verified. If the same user meets multiple criteria, the structure must remain clear; otherwise, it will be difficult to determine which hypothesis actually worked.

Targeting by job title and professional level

A job title is useful when a company has a good understanding of the specific positions of the people involved in the purchase. In international projects, it's important to consider different titles for the same role, as similar responsibilities may be designated differently in different companies.

The Job function covers a broader professional spectrum and is suitable for situations where creating a precise list of job titles is difficult. Seniority helps distinguish between specialists of different levels of responsibility, such as managers, directors, and individual contributors.

Years of experience and skills can complement the core segmentation if they are truly product-related. Adding filters to narrow the audience as much as possible is not recommended, as each new criterion must have a clear commercial justification.

Company targeting

Targeting by company is useful for products designed for a specific business size or industry. Company size helps differentiate between small, medium, and large organizations, where the approval cycle and the range of parties involved in a deal typically differ.

Company industry is used for industry segmentation when a product has different use cases depending on the type of business. A list of specific companies is useful in ABM campaigns, where the marketing department identifies target accounts and relevant decision makers in advance.

This structure allows for different offers to be developed for different groups of companies. A manufacturing company and a SaaS team rarely need the same selling points, even if the product can technically be sold to both segments.

Geography and additional audience characteristics

Geography is especially important for international launches, as competition, advertising costs, and audience response vary significantly across markets. It's best to separate campaigns for multiple countries if the budget allows for separate statistics for each.

Additional parameters may consider education, professional experience, skills, and other profile attributes. It's not necessary to use every available filter, as a complex combination of criteria can sometimes narrow the audience further than is necessary for proper testing.

The language of the advertising message must also be appropriate for the audience and market. Translating a single ad into multiple languages without adapting the offer often yields less accurate results than creating separate creatives for each user group.

Matched Audiences and Remarketing

Matched Audiences are used to work with a company's own data and existing audiences. Depending on the project, you can use contact lists, company lists, and audiences of users who have interacted with your website or advertising materials.

Remarketing helps you continue communicating with people who have already shown interest. For example, you can show specific ads to visitors to a service page, to users who watched a video, or to those who interacted with Lead Gen Forms.

To ensure these scenarios work correctly, data sources are verified in advance. If events are collected incorrectly or the audiences are too small, the advertising campaign will not receive the necessary volume for a full launch and comparison of results.

Account-Based Marketing on LinkedIn Ads

Account-Based Marketing is suitable for companies that have a pre-defined list of potential organizations. In this case, a list of companies is first compiled, then the employees involved in product selection are identified, and a corresponding offer is developed for each segment.

ABM is especially useful when selling expensive B2B solutions with a limited market of potential buyers. Instead of maximizing coverage, the budget is concentrated on companies that meet the sales team's requirements and commercial strategy.

The results of such campaigns need to be evaluated beyond the first click. Meetings, company qualifications, deal progression through the CRM, and the advertising contribution to the pipeline are all important, as quick, mass conversions in such projects may be rare.

What LinkedIn Ads formats do we use?

LinkedIn supports several ad formats that are suitable for different tasks and stages of the funnel. The choice depends on the advertising objective, the type of content, the audience characteristics, and the method by which the user should continue to interact with the company.

Sponsored Content can be used to place single images, video ads, document ads, and other content options in the feed. This format is suitable for promoting content, explaining a product, and attracting audiences to a landing page.

Lead Gen Forms shorten the contact submission process and are often used for B2B lead generation. The quality of the result depends on the offer, form questions, and subsequent qualification, so a large number of leads alone is not considered a sufficient indicator.

Sponsored Messaging, Dynamic Ads, and Text Ads are used depending on the market, goal, and available advertising platform capabilities. Each format is chosen based on audience analysis, not because it looks more eye-catching or has a new interface.

After launch, not only CTR and CPC are compared. For each format, the conversion rate, CPL, lead quality, and subsequent potential customer progression through the sales funnel are tracked.

What metrics do we track after launch?

After launch, advertising and business metrics are evaluated. Impressions show the volume of impressions, clicks show the number of click-throughs, CTR helps understand audience response to the ad, and CPC and CPM characterize the cost of attracting traffic and impressions.

Next, the conversion rate and CPL are analyzed. If forms or CRM are used, MQLs, SQLs, meetings, and other steps are added to help evaluate the quality of lead generation after the advertising interaction.

For mature analytics, CAC, pipeline, revenue, and ROAS can be used if the business is able to correctly link advertising to subsequent sales. In B2B, such a link is especially useful, as a sale may close significantly after the initial click.

The campaign evaluation flow can be represented as a sequence:

Impressions → Clicks → Conversions → Leads → MQL → SQL → Meetings → Deals → Revenue.

The further a company can track this path, the more accurately it can evaluate advertising decisions. If analytics stop at the click, some information about the true quality of the audience remains unknown.

LinkedIn Ads Optimization and Management

Optimization begins after collecting data on individual audiences and ads. The team compares segments, checks the quality of leads, and determines which campaigns should be kept, limited, or reworked.

A/B testing is conducted sequentially. You can compare different audiences, ad creatives, offers, CTAs, or landing pages, but the number of factors being simultaneously modified must remain controlled.

Bids and budgets are adjusted based on results. If one segment consistently generates higher-quality leads at an acceptable CPL, it receives additional budget, while weaker campaigns are re-evaluated.

Scaling can include new geographies, expanded audiences, additional formats, new creatives, ABM, and retargeting. At the same time, the operating structure remains intact to ensure budget growth doesn't come with a loss of control over data.

01

Analyze the business and create an ICP

Before setting up an advertising account, we determine the client type, the problem the product solves, and the characteristics of a suitable company. This includes the industry, business size, geography, the roles of the parties involved, and the current customer acquisition process.

The resulting ICP model is translated into advertising audience parameters. If several types of companies purchase the same product, it's best to separate them and test them separately, as the same advertising rarely produces the same results across different segments.

Current sales data is also analyzed. CRM often reveals which companies pass qualification faster, which job titles initiate contact, and which segments are regularly dropped after the first conversation.

02

Define goals and KPIs

The advertising campaign goal is linked to a specific stage of the funnel. This could be a lead request, demo request, registration, meeting, MQL, or SQL, if the company is able to transfer the necessary data from its CRM.

Advertising KPIs include impressions, clicks, CTR, CPC, and CPM. They are useful for campaign diagnostics, but the final scaling decision in B2B should preferably be made taking into account the CPL, lead quality, and subsequent deal progress.

If the sales cycle is long, advertising results may not be apparent until after the first contact. Therefore, before launch, it's important to agree on what data is collected and after what period the team will evaluate the quality of the acquired segment.

03

We assemble the structure of campaigns and audiences

Once goals are defined, separate campaigns and audiences are created. Segments are divided so that results can be compared without constantly guessing which targeting influenced the final results.

A hypothesis is developed for each segment. For example, a company might assume that the product is better received by marketing managers at mid-sized SaaS companies, and this segment is tested separately from large enterprises or specialists at other levels.

When scaling, the structure maintains a clear logic. New markets, offers, and audiences are added as separate elements to ensure that previous data remains suitable for further analysis.

04

Set up analytics and conversions

The LinkedIn Insight Tag is used to collect data on website visitor actions and build certain audiences. Conversion tracking links advertising campaigns to target events the company deems relevant.

UTM tags are added to ad links so that the data can be compared with web analytics and CRM systems. With the appropriate technical infrastructure, the Conversion API or another method for transmitting server-side events can be used.

Before launch, conversions are verified. An error at this stage can lead to a situation where the ad receives requests, but the advertising account doesn't see them and doesn't provide accurate data for further optimization.

05

Prepare ads and creatives

Creative must be tailored to the audience and stage of the funnel. A company executive and a technical specialist may require different arguments, even if the ad leads to the same service.

The ad copy, visuals, headline, and CTA are aligned. The promise must align with the landing page content, otherwise, after clicking, the user will encounter a different offer, and the likelihood of conversion will decrease.

For tests, a limited number of elements are changed. If you change the audience, offer, image, and page simultaneously, it will be difficult to attribute the results to a specific change.

06

Set up your budget and bidding strategy

The advertising budget is distributed among audiences based on segment size and the number of hypotheses. A budget that's too small for too many campaigns often results in each campaign receiving insufficient data for proper comparison.

When setting up, CPC, CPM, and available bidding strategies are taken into account. The choice depends on the campaign's goal and which action the system should consider when distributing impressions.

The budget can be reallocated after launch. Priority is given to segments that demonstrate acceptable cost per result and sufficient lead quality, while weaker audiences are limited or sent for retesting.

07

Check the settings and launch the campaign

Before launch, a final check of the advertising account is performed. The team reviews geography, audiences, exclusions, dates, daily budgets, links, UTM tags, forms, and configured conversion events.

Landing pages are checked separately on mobile and desktop devices. If a user, after a costly ad click, lands on a slow page with an incomprehensible form, part of the advertising budget will be lost after the click.

After the final check, the campaign is launched without any drastic changes in the first few hours. Analysis requires data, so adjustments should be based on accumulated statistics, not individual clicks or impressions.

08

Analyze initial data and optimize the campaign

After launch, audiences, ads, and conversions are compared. Initial findings focus on traffic quality, CTR, CPC, form completion, and post-click user behavior.

The data is then compared with leads. If ads generate cheap traffic but leads are consistently unqualified, the campaign requires a reconsideration of the audience or offer.

Work continues through A/B testing and iterative changes. This approach helps understand the root cause of results and keep the campaign elements that work as it scales.
